Thank you for your inputs guys. Really appreciate it because at least there are people out who can talk about this issue with real passion and knowledge about the history of music and its industry. Well, I must still say that being able to read music does make one person's mentality bout music evolved. Like JAY said about the Beatles...McCartney and Lennon and Harrison...they read music. McCartney could not read music at all in their early attempts at fame (playing in Hamburg) but he started to learn to read music because he knows that sooner or later he has to evolve....as a result...his first attempt on big brass sound for "Thingumeybob" a song for the TV programme of the samename. He composed, wrote the arrangements and conducted the brass band himself for the song recording. Moving forward to all their other stuffs like Sgt Pepper etc. Revolver is his evolvement in exploring new sounds. Well, he's a man that reads music and finally realizes that there so many things that can be explored with music. Noel Gallagher did just that. He could not read music in the beginning too (Supersonic was written on one piece of paper with only chords...not even tabs). It was a bomb and then he just felt that he wanted to progress. So, here comes BE HERE NOW (he does have the notes for ALL AROUND THE WORLD) and the most advanced progression of all...STANDING ON THE SHOULDER OF GIANTS.Playing from the heart and soul...i totally agree that's a definite! A big part. But just like writing a novel...how can someone has this one great idea for a novel but does not know well how to arrange it and make the flow just perfect? Arrangement is very important. To know how to make good arrangements, one must know the basic theory of music. Everyone can be comfortable in the position they are but if only everyone is willing to just try achieve something higher than before...remaining stagnant is just so sad. I know many out there who has great talents (they don't read music) but I believe they have the capability to spring their talent even more if they were to read music. Guess what? They are picking it up even though as we speak because they want to know more of what they can do (they are learning from the greats of the music industry who are based in KL & Indonesia) but still remaining of the soul of the music genre that they love. They just want to contribute to the music genre they love (rock & roll). That's how new music genres actually spawned but if you look at it...it all come from similar genres.
There's no harm in learning music if you want to be an accomplished musician. If you were to session another band, reading music is critical especially when they hand you out the notes of a song that you have never heard of but are required to learn it in a nick of time. Oh yeah, I am not saying that pemuzik jalanan are this and this and this...I am defining that pemuzik jalanan are people a term used for musicians who remain static and has limited knowledge in music and its basis. Kalau nak progress further boleh...cuma sifat malas yang akan membuatkan seseorang itu ketinggalan. If want to learn from the greats, go out there and find them. Explore. Everyone can do it.

I am a pemuzik jalanan(and damn proud of it I am), not a very good one at that. I can't read notes, but that never really bothered me. To me, the music I listen to and play, makes me feel good. I write songs in a very Oasis fashion and not to please anyone, but just for myself.

But I agree and disagree with your point on the progression that one has to make in music. The perfect example of band that did the evolution in music were the Beatles. You're right, in the early days they made great tunes with simple chord progs, but look at how they progressed. The White Album, Revolver, Rubber Soul, Abbey Road, Sg. Pepper's, man, those were classics. But having said that, bands that didn't make any change to their music, remain legends today. Take The Stones for example, Satisfaction, through Jumpin Jack Flash to Rough Justice, their sound has remained the same(God Bless Keith Richards). So I guess, your Nasi Lemak theory has a coupl'a flaws eh?

Going back to the part about being able to read notes to make great music, I disagree with that as well, maybe if want to be David Gilmore or Brian May, you may want to do indulge in that. I believe in playing from the soul, with feel. Take Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Stevie Ray, Ray Charles those guys played from the heart! All that it takes to play the blues is a guitar and some soul.

But hey, that's just what I think. Music should feel like what you want it to feel like, not what others feel it should be.

Merujuk kepada nukilan saudara bertarikh 29.7.06. Saya berasa amat terkilan apabila membaca artikel tersebut. Maklumlah, saya ni, pemuzik jalanan, 'SPM' pun tak pass, hari hari makan nasi kandar shj, nasi lemak pun tak layak. (nak belajar nasi tangas, takde orang nak ajar). Tapi apakan daya, itu adalah pendirian saudara dari segala pengalaman yang telah dilalui. Why am i speaking in BM suddenly? F*ck that shit hehehehe...I guess its true to a certain extent. If u can play like Malmsteen and u cant arrange music properly u'd end up sounding like Malmsteen as well: utter rubbish. But then again i do feel that i have to defend heavy music following you're goodly dollop of lambasting. Fact: listening/limiting urself to just 1 music genre is silly. Fact: Rock music kicks ass. Fact: So does just about every other genre of music known to man except nasyid and country. The whole idea is about growth, and limiting urself to just one influence = stagnation. But i have to say that rock music in itself draws from a huge amount of influence. And true enough, anybody who decides to delve deep into rock or metal or scream/blood/murder/gore/kill/watever genre will realize that the musicians they listen to draw from a wide range of influences themselves. Gregg tribbett, Frederik Thordendaal - jazz, Mikael Akerfeldt - Blues,Kirk Hammet - Blues & Jazz, Robby Krieger, John Petrucci & Malmsteen - Classical. Thats just scratching the surface. Think of it as tradition. Rock is a new tradition, built upon the foundations of older traditions such as the classics, jazz and blues. The evidence is everywhere. The timing signatures, the melodies, the scales, the techniques are all based on tradition. Denying this tradition is denying yourself. I admit that i respect individual choice, but in this articles case i have to admit that Izwan has a point. Free your mind. Try something new. suggestion : pick up a copy of SRVs little wing. It changed my musical perceptions completely. It will do the same to you too.
